While we’re all still miffed that Game of Thrones finally has an end in sight, it’s not over yet… and there’s a big world out there still to be explored.
It’s well known that HBO currently have spin-offs in the works, but we now have some more info on them, including when we’ll maybe see them thanks to programming president Casey Bloys.
“The number one priority in all of this is the final season of Game of Thrones,” says Bloys at the Television Critic Association (TCA).
“I don’t want to do anything with a spinoff or anything that detracts or distracts from that.
“That season will happen, and my guess is it would be at least a year before you saw anything else. What I don’t want is the attention to be drawn from the final season, which I think is going to be epic and amazing, and somehow have the distraction of a new Game of Thrones airing right after that. It’s best to separate it and that’s what we’ll do.”
Which is all fair enough since the main thing here is the story we’re all in the middle of right now. He also added some interesting details, including that all the shows will be prequels (is it just us or does that not sound like a happy ending is coming to thrones?), none will be about Robert Baratheon’s rebellion and creator Geroge RR Martin will be somewhat involved in them all.
Though he’s keen to point out that nothing is set in stone yet: “We’ll be lucky to get one that hits and we’re hopeful and we’ll see.”
Between now and then, however, we still have the final season next year which we’re hearing could consist of episodes of feature length: “I imagine they’ll be longer,” he says, “but … I’m not sure [how long]. We haven’t had that discussion yet because I don’t know how long the episodes are going to be. Two hours per episode seems like it would be excessive, but it’s a great show, so who knows?
So there you have it – up to five spinoffs, all prequels and all will be worked on by Martin himself and next season will have longer episodes.
