Oooooooh… if you know me, you’ll know I’m a MASSIVE Scream fan and oh, Lordy, it looks like there’s some fresh new Scream goodness to be consumed on the interwebs.
Steam was the victim of a massive leak a few days back, and it saw files from 2003 – 2013 released into the wild, and in among the files was what seems to be the cancelled Scream game I was reporting on a couple of years ago.
Last May, I reported on the game and its potentially being a prequel, saying: “The game will follow a story pattern, which will see players take on the role of a victim/survivor in a decision-based format. But the game will receive several modes and one of those modes will allow survivors to take on the role as one of the killers and play out certain narratives from the killer’s perspective.
“[the game] won’t follow a timeline set within the Scream movies universe. It is apparently going to be going back before the events of 1996, and could serve as a prequel to the origins of the Ghostface mask.”
Now, X user roly poly reaper has posted a load of footage from the game – I’ve posted some of it below – and it looks like a lot of fun, if a little simplistic, although it’s believed this was merely to pitch the game at the time.
As of now, it seems to be believed that the game went into production as it is here, in 2011, around the release of Scream IV, which does, admittedly, make me think this may not be the same game I was reporting on until last May.
New Scream video game to be a prequel to the 1996 original movie?
While the game and its actual origins are a mystery, with Halloween getting a major game release in the next few days, I think it’s long past time we had a Scream/Ghostface game… when you bear in mind that anyone can put on the mask, I think there’s a lot of possibilities for a Scream game with elements of a slasher and a whodunnit/mystery all sitting there, waiting to be explored.
And when I first heard the game was set to be a Scream prequel, I automatically assumed it would be based arpund the night Sidney Prescott’s (Neve Campbell) mum was murdered by Stu and Billy (Matthew Lillard and Skeet Ulrich) and I think in the Scream universe, that might be a story that still needs told, especially since the lore of the sequels fleshed out the idea that Stu and Billy might have been the leaders of something much, much bigger.
Cult of Ghostface: The Game? I’d buy that in a heartbeat.
Thoughts? I know you have them and I wanna hear ’em all.
Check out some of the gameplay:
So, going through the Valve Leak, I have discovered a cancelled multiplayer SCREAM game made by Fatshark (Dead Island Developers) under Depot 42151.
I won’t post any download links as I don’t know the legality of this but it’s all publicly available in the leak. #Valve #Scream pic.twitter.com/m5jla316QW— roly poly reaper (@fellarobux) August 31, 2026
