Let’s be honest, the Resident Evil franchise has seen better days. It would seem since the release of Resident Evil 5, the series has lost much of the unique horror gameplay that made it so involving in the first place.

Gone are a lot of the scares and limited resources, replaced with a more action heavy approach, more akin to Gears of War. With the poor reception of the latest entry, Resident Evil 6, the future of the franchise has been called into question. In response to this, a talented group of fans have decided to revisit, arguably, the series best entry.

A set of developers, known as Invader Games, is working on a remake of Resident Evil 2 that runs on the Unreal Engine 4. The developers released some footage of actual gameplay. Based on this, they have removed the locked camera, in favour of the over the shoulder view, popularised in Resident Evil 4.

Personally, I think this all looks quite impressive, and the fact that it is all going online for free, is particularly tantalising. The game is scheduled for a release this summer. Here’s hoping that it reminds Capcom of the reasons people truly love this franchise.
