Surprise mutherf@£ker!
Yes! Yes! Yes! Dexter is back to (hopefully get the ending he deserved but was so cruelly denied when the series wrapped in 2013.
The series, which was hastily ended at the time to give up-and-coming hit show Ray Donovan the attention it deserved, was unceremoniously wrapped with one of the most horrendous final seasons ever committed to film which was sad because – and I admit they weren’t all winners – the show and especially Dexter himself, deserved so much better.
Don’t believe me? Here’s our man Andy’s review from back in the day (here).
But now our favourite serial killer is back for a limited series from Showtime and we couldn’t be more excited.
And it’s not a reboot or a reimagining or any of that ol’ gumpf, it’s a straight-up follow-up with Michael C Hall back as Dexter Morgan, the Miami police crime scene analyst who, because of a horrific incident in his childhood, has murderous tendencies which he channels into only killing those who deserve it and the police can’t touch.
On top of that, showrunner Clyde Phillips is back, em, showrunning with the series expected to air around fall of 2021 with filming to start early next year.
Morgan has made no secret of his willingness to return as Dexter, especially since the final (shudder) season left it open for a continuation but Gary Levine, Co-President of Entertainment at Showtime, has made it clear they would only proceed if they found a worthy creative team and he insists that they have “found it” – pity they weren’t so fussy back in 2013.
Any, sorry. I’m still a little bitter.
Phillips was Dexter’s showrunner, writer and exec producer during the show’s first four seasons – the glory years of the series – and is very much welcomed back to the gig by we, the fans.
“We would only revisit this unique character if we could find a creative take that was truly worthy of the brilliant, original series. Well, I am happy to report that Clyde Phillips and Michael C. Hall have found it, and we can’t wait to shoot it and show it to the world,” said Levine.
So, who’s excited to have Dexter back? Let me know your thoughts, gang…
