Simon Pegg believes now is the time to make a new movie with Wright and hopefully Frost

In a new interview with Virgin Radio while promoting Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning, Simon Pegg says he believes now might be the time to make a fourth Cornetto movie with friend and filmmaker Edgar Wright.

Pegg, along with Nick Frost, first worked with Wright in 1999’s Spaced series (26 years?!) and the trio went on to make three cracking movies together, known as the Cornetto Trilogy because they all feature characters eating the icecreams of the same name- the movies are, of course, Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz and the criminally underrated The World’s End – but now Pegg is saying it might be time to get the gang back together again.

Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz and The World’s End riffed on popular genres, notably the zombie movie, the buddy cop movie and the alien invasion movie, but there’s always room for a fourth chapter.

Simon Pegg says he and Edgar Wright are planning new movie… but there’s not going to be any Cornettos involved

That said, and I’ll go into this more shortly, it might not be a Cornetto movie at all.

“After [Edgar’s new film] ‘Running Man’, I feel that’s our moment to come up with our fourth movie,” Pegg said.

The star does note that Frost recently signed on to HBO’s Harry Potter series which will film for a decade or so, so getting him could be an issue: “Nick Frost’s been cast as Hagrid so I don’t know how we’ll get hold of him,” he says.

Back in 2023, Pegg said he and Wright wanted to make a new movie together but not one thatw would fit under the Cornetto banner and, in fairness, this could still be what he’s hinting at, given Frost’s commitments… after all, you can’t do a Cornetto movie without all three together.

Back then, he said: “Edgar and I are always talking about what we’re going to do next.

“The real problem now is about syncing our diaries up at a time when we can both sit down and write a film. And then obviously shoot it. I’ll say this, it’s not about if but when we will do something, which we will do because we’ve already started talking about it.

“Edgar came over to my house last year and we started kicking ideas around,” Pegg went on.

“It’s not going to be another sort of Cornetto film in that those movies were specifically genre riffs, which addressed the idea of the collective versus the individual. There are certain kinds of thematic consistencies between those three movies which make them a trilogy – it’s not just the ice cream, it’s a series of connecting thematic details.

“With what do next, we want to be completely different from that. We don’t want to do a take on action movies or a take on sci-fi or a take on horror. We want to make a movie that is totally its own thing, existing outside of the Cornetto trilogy. My desire, really, is to do something super different.”

I love Pegg, Wright and Frost and watch everything they do, separately and together, but having them reunite, even if it’s not a Cornetto-themed outing, would be pretty special.

Thoughts? I know you have them… and I wanna hear ’em all.
