Get ready to board the Black Pearl again folks, hopefully with Captain Jack Sparrow back at the wheel!
In a new interview, producer Jerry Bruckheimer has confirmed that they have spoken to Johnny Depp about returning and, if the script works, he’s on board (literally): “If he likes the way the part’s written, I think he would do it,” Bruckheimer says. “It’s all about what’s on the page, as we all know.”
The Franchise, which has been dead in the water (the puns write themselves) since Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales in 2017, has been touted for the reboot treatment for a few years now with Margot Robbie and Karen Gillen both rumoured to be replacing Depp and then the world was Depp might be a cameo in the new movies, with Bruckheimer prevously saying: “It’s a reboot, but if it was up to me, he [Depp] would be in it… He created Captain Jack. That was not on the page; that was him doing a little Pepé Le Pew and Keith Richards. That was his interpretation of Jack Sparrow.”
New Pirates of the Caribbean movie being developed in hope of Johnny Depp return
Now star Orlando Bloom, who played Will Turner in the series, has also said that, if they want another Pirates movie, the female reboot is maybe not the way to go, with the smart movie being to bring himself, Depp and Keira Knightley’s Elizabeth Swann back as the franchise’s three leads.
“I would personally love to see everybody back,” Bloom says, “I think the way to win on that one is to get everybody back. If they can, and if everybody wanted to go back.”
As for the reboot idea, he clearly feels the way all the fans do, but is hesitant to say it loudly: “What they’re thinking…is how to do it. Do you bring in a female leading character that replicates Jack in some way? I don’t know. The jury is out on how to do it again, but if [the script] was great, [I’d be in].”
Margot Robbie to lead second Pirates of the Caribbean female-led movie
The sixth movie is currently going through the writing stages with Dead Men Tell No Tales scribe Jeff Nathanson working on it… Bruckheimer has said several times that it’s coming on well but isn’t quite there yet.
Look, there’s no point in beating around the issue here, the Pirates movies are a lot of fun but without Depp, there is no franchise, so even considering going on without him is just silly.
Thoughts? I know you have them and I wanna hear ’em all.
