It seems that the road to the Dark Tower is still extending in front of writer Mike Flanagan as we fans all sit waiting for a proper adaptation of Stephen King’s masterpiece after the 2017 movie disaster that many fans refuse to even admit exists.
Flanagan has been a very busy chap recently with directing The Life of Chuck, another King project, writing the DCU’s Clayface story and being wrapped up in the Carrie and Exorcist shows, but he has never taken his eye of the Tower.
“It’s moving,” Flanagan says of the project, “We’ve got a lot of scripts done for it. It’s the first priority.”
The movie, which wasted and miscast both Idris Elba and, to a lesser degree Matthew McConaughey, was directed by Nikolaj Arcel and tried to adapt all eight of King’s Dark Tower books into one 90min movie, while nodding to other King works such as IT and The Shinning (all of King’s books tie back to the Tower in some way or other) and left such a sour taste in the mouth of fans: “We can’t let that be the final word. We really can’t,” Flanagan says.
Flanagan, who is in a deal with Amazon has made it clear in the past that, despite once making a Dark Tower pilot, the series isn’t just automatically going to be at home there, saying a few years back that: “We actually have those rights carved out of our Amazon deal, which doesn’t mean that they can’t or won’t get behind it at some point — you don’t know. But that’s something we’ve been developing ourselves and are really passionate about finally getting it up on its feet at some point.”
The Dark Tower tells the story of the last Gunslinger, Roland Deschain, who is on a sacred journey to save the Dark Tower, which holds the fate of all realities and worlds, in the balance; it’s a massive story and it really deserves to be given the Game of Thrones or Lord of the Rings treatment.
