Wait… is it actually happening?! Are we getting back on the Serenity?
Firefly, the other amazing Joss Whedon series, aired in 2002 but due to Fox not knowing how to handle it and making loads of bad choices in its broadcast slot, it was cancelled before it even had a chance to really fly (only 11 of its produced episodes 14 even aired), but the fans found it and became so passionate about it that in 2005 we got the story wrapped up in Serenity on the big screen.
Telling the story of Capt Mal Reynolds (Nathan Fillion) and his ship, Serenity, and his crew Zoe (Gina Torres), Wash (Alan Tudyk), Kaylee (Jewel Staite), Jayne (Adam Baldwin), Simon and River Tam (Sean Maher and Summer Glau) and Shepard Book (the late Ron Glass), who are all on bpard for their own reasons and all hiding from their pasts in one way or other, the show was action, space ships, evil empires and cowboys, all wrapped up in one glorious package.
But, while Serenity was (especially in the early 2000s) a rare chance to revisit a story and arguably an end to the tale, the fans still wanted more.
And now they may be getting it.
Over the last few days, Fillion has been posting on Instagram videos of him visiting the cast and teasing ‘are we really doing this?’ and ‘it’s time’ as he goes.
You can watch all the videos below, and I waited until everyone was visited before I bit the bullet because I did not believe it was real but now, just like Neo, I’m beginning to believe, especially since Fillion wrote on his video with Sean Maher that: “Some of you have guessed convention, podcast, or cross-over. You are wrong.”
You may have noticed that two of the cast are not in the list of revisited and there’s a reason for that – firstly, as I noted above, sadly, Ron Glass died in 2016. Also, Alan Tudyk was not visited either and that’s because, like Glass’ Shepard Book, his character, Wash, died in the events of Serenity.
That means that, when we last saw the crew, all members – including Fillion himself – are present and accounted for and, with Summer Glau posting on social media that an “announcement [is] coming soon…” and Jewel Staite revealing that all will be revealed next Sunday, March 15th.

Last year, Morena Baccarin said that there’s always talk of the crew reuniting but she couldn’t imagine it happening in live-action: “There’s always talk. There’s always people asking about it. Part of me would be excited to revisit that world, and part of me is also a little bit like, I love it so much where it is, that I’m worried about reopening that door. That’s a lot of different careers and different people that you have to negotiate with and make work and all that … schedules and whatnot. Could there be a comic book or [another] thing–maybe?”
While it really does feel like this is pointing towards a new series or movie – it’s been so much fun seeing everyone talking about the ‘verse on socials – I feel that, love him or hate him, Firefly and Serenity were uniquely from the mind of Joss Whedon and it’s hard to imagine it being steered by anyone but him, espeically with Disney recently being the place franchises go to die. I feel it’s more likely that this is, at worst, something completely unrelated and at best, an animated series or new audio series or something like that. But, as I often say, I am always an optimist, and if we get another chance to see Serenity fly, you know I will be the first on board.
Thoughts? I know you have them, and I wanna hear ’em all.
