Disney+ developing new Firefly/Serenity series?

January 22nd, 2021 by Marc Comments

A new rumour suggests that, as streaming becomes more and more the norm as that damned virus destroys cinemas across the world, the big services are struggling to find bankable shows and movies.

None more than Disney+.

And it seems they are setting their sites on the TV show that is probably called out for a return more than any other… Firefly.

Yes, the good ship Serenity and its crew of misfits may be set for some sort of return in the not-too-distant future.

We know that Boom!’s newest comic series is taking the franchise into the future and introducing a whole new crew (here) but it will be interesting to see if this has any similarity to the new series.

According to the new rumour, the new series will be more family-friendly and is set to be a “long-running” series. More alarmingly, it’s said to restart the adventures of Captain Mal Reynolds (Nathan Fillion) and the crew from scratch.

It’s also unknown at this stage if creator of Firefly and its spinoff movie Serenity, Joss Whedon, will be involved.

Personally, I would love to see stories set in the Firefly universe (or the ‘verse as fans will know it) but I think rebooting and recasting Mal, Wash, Inara and all the rest would be a mistake and would likely not sit well with the fans. There’s a lot of adventure out there in the universe, just pick a new corner.

Anyway, what say you all, guys? Would you like to see the gang recast or would you rather see a sequel or sister series? I want to hear your thoughts…

Marc is a self-confessed nerd. Ever since seeing Star Wars for the first time around 1979 he’s been an unapologetic fan of the Wars and still believes, with Clone Wars and now Underworld, we are yet to see the best Star Wars. He’s a dad of two who now doesn’t have the time (or money) to collect the amount of toys, comics, movies and books he once did, much to the relief of his long-suffering wife. In the real world he’s a graphic designer. He started Following the Nerd because he was tired of searching a million sites every day for all the best news that he loves and decided to create one place where you can go to get the whole lot. Secretly he longs to be sitting in the cockpit of his YT-1300 Corellian Transport ship with his co-pilot Chewie, roaming the universe, waiting for his next big adventure, but feels just at home watching cartoons with his kids….
