It looks like Sony has plans to bring Venom back to the big screen, but not in the way they have three times before… is everyone’s favourite Symbiote heading into the Spider-Verse?
It’s been revealed that Final Destination: Bloodlines’ Zach Lipovsky and Adam B Stein will be directing a new animated Venom movie, bringing the iconic Spider-Man anti-hero back to cinemas for fans.
Tom Hardy, who played Eddie Brock/Venom in the live-action movies, is attached here too as producer
As of right now, no writers are attached, but it seems that a writers’ room has been opened and scripts and ideas will be developed there.
What exactly the plan is, is unclear right now, although the obvious thought would be it’s going to be part of the animated Spider-Verse, created by Phil Lord and Chris Miller.
Lionsgate confirm John Wick video game, big announcement coming soon
However, if a Venom script hasn’t been written yet, given how painstaking the Spider-Verse movies are, it means it’s still several, possibly many, years away.
Speaking of Spider-Verse, Lord and Miller recently revealed that the third movie in the trilogy, Beyond the Spider-Verse, is currently at the animation stage and coyly said that it will mark the end of the current trilogy… so is there more to come? Well, yes.
Sony Pictures bosses Damien de Froberville and Kristine Belson recently confirmed that both Spider-Gwen and Spider-Punk are getting animated spinoff movies, saying: “We are active on both.”
“I haven’t heard anything lately,” McKenna Grace talks fifth Ghostbusters movie
As of now, it’s believed that Psychoville and Black Panther star Daniel Kaluuya will return to voice Spider-Punk/Hobie Brown and is likely writing too. It’s not yet known if Sinners and Hawkeye star Hailee Steinfeld will return as Spider-Gwen/Gwen Stacey.
Interestingly, and surprisingly, in related news, Oren Uziel, showrunner of the upcoming Spider-Noir series starring Nic Cage, has confirmed that while it’s Cage playing the character he first played in the Into the Spider-Verse, it’s not the same character: “Same character, different universe,” he said,
“It’s a different flavour of that character, even though it’s still Nick’s voice. It’s not a continuation of Into the Spider-Verse. Once Phil and Chris introduced the idea of the multiverse, I think you’re allowed to take things and make them your own.”
So, Venom may be Spider-Verse-bound, Spider-Gwen and Spider-Punk are coming back Spider-Noir isn’t the same one we’ve met before… are you excited for how the Spider-verse is shaping up?
Thoughts? I know you have them and I wanna hear ’em all.
