It looks like we have real movement on Ryan Coogler’s upcoming X-Files reboot/sequel, as the cast is filling out, and it looks like Mulder and Scully will be coming back. Fingers crossed.
Ok, first up, it seems that Coogler, who will write and direct the pilot episode, has found his two new leads for the series in the form of Rooster star Danielle Deadwyler and Yesterday’s Himesh Patel, both left.
The series, which has been picked up by Hulu, who recently passed on the highly anticipated Buffy: The Vampire Slayer reboot, will feature the duo, not as Fox Mulder and Dana Scully, played by David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson in the original series in 1993, but as new characters, although the official description does make it sound very familiar: Two highly decorated but vastly different FBI agents form an unlikely bond when they are assigned to a long-shuttered division devoted to cases involving unexplained phenomena. Interestingly, Patel and Deadwyler previously appeared together in Station Eleven.
Gillian Anderson confirms she’s up for return in Ryan Coogler’s X-Files reboot
The Copenhagen Test’s Jennifer Yale will be the showrunner on the new series.
Speaking of Mulder and Scully, it’s looking more and more likely that the original duo will be returning for the new series, although in what capacity is yet to be seen.
Coogler has previously revealed that he has spoken to Anderson about coming back, and now the star has revealed that she has read the script. Speaking at Awesome Con in Washington, D.C., she said that the script is very good and hopes fans will “have an open mind and give it a chance, because it’s gonna be f***ing cool”.
While we knew Anderson was in the loop, now it seems that Coogler has also reached out to Duchovny and, while he’s being a little cagey in his comments, he’s definitely giving off the vibe that he’s interested but he – understandably – wants to know what the story is, if Mulder fits in it and who will be creating these new stories: “I’ve spoken to Ryan, and I have a general sense of what it is, but I haven’t read the script,” he says.

“There have been talks about certain things, but there’s nothing concrete at this point. I don’t know what the world of his show is. I don’t know if my character exists in that show. It’s all hypothetical to me, so I can’t really address it.”
Going on to talk about the writers on the original series compared to how shows today only have 10-12 episodes per season as opposed to the 22-24 seasons used to, Duchovny goes on: “It really comes down to the writers’ room for me. Because we had great writers. We had Vince Gilligan, the Morgan brothers, Howard Gordon, Darin Morgan and others. We were blessed to have a writers’ room that could generate 20 to 25 movie ideas. I’m not going to insult something like The Pitt, because that’s great television. But The X-Files was a movie idea every week.
“So I hope Ryan doesn’t have to do 25 [episodes] and only has to do 10 or 12. And I hope he’s got great writers because that’s really the key to making that show work.”
So, the pilot is coming, Patel and Deadwyler are solid actors, and it looks like Coogler wants Mulder and Scully back too. If this is a legacy series, then I’m fully onboard.
Let’s just hope Hulu doesn’t pull the plug as they did with poor Buffy.
Ok, thoughts? I know you have them and I wanna hear ’em all.
