A little under two weeks ago I reported that Sinners director Ryan Coogler had spoken about his long-gestating X-Files reboot and how he had chatted to star Gillian Anderson and even teased her return. Well, now Anderson has spoken about the planned reboot and her potential return as FBI Agent Dana Scully.
Speaking about his talk with Anderson, Coogler said: “She’s incredible and fingers crossed there… We’re going to try to make something really great, bro, and make something for the real ‘X-Files’ fans and maybe find some new ones.”
Now, on The Morning in the UK, Anderson herself was asked about the series’ return and if she’s going to be involved.
“I spoke to [Coogler], and what I said was, ‘If anyone were to do it, I think you are the perfect person, and best of luck,’” Anderson said on the talk show, adding that she told him to: ‘call her’.
But does that mean she’d be up for a return as Scully? Well, it seems it does: “At some point, if the phone rings and it’s good and it feels like the right time, perhaps,” the actress said.
Anderson starred as Scully alongside co-star David Duchovny as Fox Mulder, left, in the series that ran from 1994 until 2018 (on and off) and even had a couple of big-screen outings and, I don’t think it’s hyperbolic to say that The X-Files paved the way for everything from Buffy the Vampire Slayer to Game of Thrones and everything in between.
Sarah Michelle Gellar talks Buffy return: “If people think I can still kick butt”
The series was a phenomenon and made stars of Anderon and Duchovny and brought the world of UFOs and conspiracy theories into the mainstream in a way that was unfathomable just a few years earlier.
I hope Coogler can do it justice and capture the magic that creator Chris Carter did back in the 90s – if Sinners is anything to go by, we could be in for a real treat.
Now, can we get Duchovny back too, please?
Thoughts? I wanna hear ’em…
