I
I have been writing for almost as long as this site has been around, about a potential Buffy the Vampire Slayer reboot or sequel but in the last few months, it feels like something has shifted.
Star of the show, Sarah Michelle Gellar, has been a bit of a stumbling block, often saying how much she didn’t want to revisit the character (“I am very proud of the show that we created and it doesn’t need to be done. We wrapped that up.”) but it seems that her recent role in Dexter: Original Sin (which is great – if you’ve been avoiding it, don’t) and the resurgence of classic characters such as Sidney Prescott in the Scream movie (Geller herself appeared in Scream 2) and Jamie Lee Curtis as Laurie Strode in the Halloween movies, has made Gellar reassess.
The actress says of her previous unwillingness to return: “I always used to say no, because it’s in its bubble and it’s so perfect. But watching ‘[And Just Like That…]’ and seeing ‘[Dexter: Original Sin],’ and realizing there are ways to do it, definitely does get your mind thinking, ‘Well, maybe.’”
Indeed, Dolly Parton’s involvement in a potential reboot really seemed to get her interested, when she found out, Gellar said: “If Dolly Parton is going to call me I’m always available to take a phone call from the queen.”
Sarah Michelle Gellar might come back as Buffy…for Dolly Parton
In a new interview, the question of the return of Buffy Summers comes up again and Gellar seems to have all but done a full about shift on the idea of returning and, not gonna lie, it has us all at FTN HQ kinda buzzing.
“I think they will get someone younger if she does come back,” she says, but adds: “But if people think that I can still save the world and kick butt, I’m okay with that!”
We still think you can save the world and kick butt! Believe us!
“I’m happy with how we ended things with Buffy,” the star goes on, saying: “I loved playing her and I feel proud of what she stood for, what she still stands for.
“She wasn’t just the girlfriend or the token female, all things we take for granted in film and television now. I feel like Buffy was a part of that positive change.”
Buffy was not unique but she certainly stood strong among characters like Sarah Connor, Sidney Prescott, Lara Croft and Dana Scully and perhaps a return of Buffy could remind writers and creators that to have someone as strong as Buffy Summers saving the world on a weekly basis, you must also know how to writer her vulnerabilities and just how important friends and family are… there’s quite a few who have forgotten how to write good characters and, more importantly, believable strong women.
Buffy: The return? Let me know your thoughts…
