“I would love to go back,” Guillermo Del Toro talks Pacific Rim

It may have come out 13 years ago and spawned a sequel, animated series and several comic series, but one thing that’s always constant is that nothing tops Guillermo Del Toro’s Pacific Rim and more than anything, we fans want him back to do a proper sequel.

I feel I can say that and not fear rebuttal. But it’s the internet, so who knows.

Anyway, while he has long since moved on to other projects but the Hellboy and Pan’s Labyrinth director still would love to return to that world and explore further the complexities of giant monsters (Kaiju) fighting giant piloted robots (Jaegers) and man, I couldn’t agree more.

Now, in a new AMA on Reddit, left, the topic of a new Pacific Rim came up and true to form, Del Toro jumped at the opportunity to make it clear he still loves the original and would go back to make a new movie if he could.

“I would love to go back. A kaiju-mecha intersection is my sweet spot. That’s why I agreed to do Pacific Rim based on the outline by Travis Beacham,” Del Toro says.

After pointing out that one of his big additions to the movie’s lore was that the jaefers had to have two pilots, Del Toro goes on to gush about how much he loves the movie: “Oh my god, I tried so many new things in the way we shot the kaiju, that now I see in other kaiju movies, like the night and the rain, the neon lights. It was such a joy. To me, it’s one of my favorite movies I ever shot. I adore it.”

When Pacific Rim: Uprising was released in 2018, director Steven S De Knight took over because Del Toro was unable to step up – that’s a story in itself, as Del Toro wanted to come back – it was planned as the beginning of a new franchise but sadly, it failed to score the necessary box office and the series’ big-screen outings ended there.

An anime series, Pacific Rim: The Black, had two seasons on Netflix in 2021 but failed to really make an impression. A live-action series is being developed by Amazon with Eric Heisserer writing, but there’s been no news on that since last year.

If Pacific Rim is ever to return – and I really hope it does – we need Del Toro back at the helm. Star of the first movie, Charlie Hunnam said recently that he’d come back for another movie with Del Toro in a heartbeat: “I would do anything that Guillermo was doing.

“If Guillermo invites me to do Pacific Rim 3, I’ll be there. Or anything else he wants to do.”

Pacific Rim crossover with Godzilla and King Kong? It could happen…

Interestingly, over the last few years, there’s been talk and rumour of the Pacific Rim franchise crossing over into the Monsterverse and it would be something that could be easily done, given that they are both franchises that feature multiverses, portals and other worlds, but I think at this stage it’s unlikely to happen but I know that if it ever does, I would be here for it in a heartbeat.

Will Del Toro ever return to the franchise? Will the live-action series ever happen? Will Godzilla someday fight a Jaeger? At this stage, who knows but if the Monsterverse can cross over with the Justice League in a story that was not only fun but kinda made sense, then never give up hope.

Thoughts? I know you have them and I wanna hear ’em all…
