While we’re all recovering from the mediocrity of The Mandalorian and Grogu, here at FTN HQ, we’re not too downhearted because we know that in a little over a week, the Masters of the Universe, led by He-Man, will be heading to cinemas to give us the quality nostalgia hit we need.
But before that movie even opens, and early word is very positive, director Travis Knight, during a roundtable event, has already spoken about what comes next for Nicholas Galitzine’s He-Man/Prince Adam.
While the movie looks great and exactly what we, as kids of the 80s, have wanted for literally forty years, it’s unclear at this stage if the movie will do the numbers it needs to get a sequel, but I admire Knight for thinking about it already and also, with prequel novels and comics already set for release in the coming weeks, it’s a safe bet that this version of He-Man and the Masters of the Universe will be around for a while, with plenty more story to tell, even if it’s not necessarily on the big screen.
Gina Carano ‘has had talks’ with Filoni and Favreau… Cara Dune returning to Star Wars?
But for now, let’s hear how Knight sees the story progressing:
“There are things that I wanted to put in this movie that we weren’t able to do,” Knight says, “things I’d like to explore, characters, deeper aspects of some of these characters that we’d like to explore. I think about what happens next for Adam. Where’s the next stage of his life take him now that he’s properly He-Man? What does that mean? And at the essence of it is relationships. It’s always about relationships for me. And so how do those relationships evolve moving forward?”
Knight, however, is not naive about what it takes to get a sequel made: “As much as we would like to tell more of these stories, if the world doesn’t want them, we won’t tell them. But if the world demands more of them, we’d be very lucky to be able to tell more stories in this universe.”
However, talking about making the movie, Knight it keen to make it clear that sequels and a bigger franchise were not his goal going in to the movie, but rather he wanted to tell one good story, and if more come, then that’s a bonus: “I always approach these things as if you only get one shot at it. And if that’s the case, and we make this movie and there are no more stories to follow, we put everything we had into it and I’m incredibly proud of the film. I think it’s fun. I think it’s exciting. I think it has incredible heart. I think it tells an emotional story and I’m just really proud of the crew who did exceptional work, the actors who brought everything they had to the movie. I’m just really proud of the work that everybody put into it and what we got out of the other side.”

As a child of the period of time, who grew up watching He-Man, Transformers, Real Ghostbusters, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, and so much more, I know the nostalgia is real, but I also know that these stories and characters endure because they were creative, exciting, fun, and, most importantly, were written in such a way that their stories can eveolve, change and be told again whiel still holding onto the magic that made them loved by kids (and adults) all across the world.
I think maybe now, more than ever, we need He-Man and Optimus Prime more than ever, timeless beacons of hope, bravery, and love.
Thoughts? I know you have them and I wanna hear ’em all.
Tidbit:
The studio put on a drone show to promote the movie over LA during the week, breaking the current Guinness World Record with 1600 drones.
And it’s damned impressive:
