It looks like Fight Club and The Game director David Fincher’s US Squid Game series has died a death, meaning, for now at least, it looks like the games are no longer afoot.
Based on the massive Korean series, Squid Game, Fincher was poised to bring a US-based series which would see down-on-their-luck members of the public enter a series of games that, for one person, would lead to great wealth, but for everyone else, it would mean death.
In fact, you may recall that at the end of Squid Game season 3, Cate Blanchett gave a surprise cameo, setting up the US series, but it seems that now that idea is no longer moving forward.

According to a new report, Netflix has altered its designs for the franchise, which seemed to be to set up Squid Game all over the world, with the first three seasons being set in Korea, then the US next, then… who knows?
Last summer, creator Dong-hyuk said of the finale that set up the US spinoff: “The game in Korea ended (spoiler) with Gi-hun’s sacrifice, but I wanted to show that the game was still ongoing elsewhere and that the world had not changed that much. We wanted to say: this isn’t really over. Plus, if it was totally wrapped up, our fans would be sad, and we wouldn’t have a reason to come back.”
I’d say it’s still very likely we will see some sort of return to the world of Squid Game in the future, it just looks like it’s going to be something entirely new without Fincher’s involvement.
Shame, really.
Squid Game seasons 1-3 are currently available to stream on Netflix.

Lee Jung-jae, Lee Byung-hun, Wi Ha-jun, and Gong Yoo reprise their roles from Season 1 with an impeccable list of new cast members including Yim Si-wan, Kang Ha-neul, Park Gyu-young, Lee Jin-uk, Park Sung-hoon, Yang Dong-geun, Kang Ae-sim, Lee David, Choi Seung-hyun, Roh Jae-won, Jo Yu-ri, and Won Ji-an rounding out the ensemble of colorful characters in the new season.
