Dynamic Duo casts Nightwing, Robin, Batgirl and… Batman?

Finally, we have some exciting news for the upcoming Dynamic Duo, the first animated adventure from DC Studios.

Now, just to catch up, Dynamic Duo was first announced in 2024, and we learned it would focus on Batman’s first two Robins, Dick Grayson and Jason Todd. At the time, it was expected that the movie would be part of the ongoing DCU but then James Gunn himself confirmed that no, this was a standalone adventure and would not affect the DCU’s story or characters.

However, a few weeks back, a new rumour came out that Dynamic Duo is looking like it might potentially move into the DCU and might even give us our introduction to that world’s Batman ahead of Batman: The Brave and the Bold live-action movie.

Given this information, this news could mean we’re learning who will be playing these characters in the live-action DCU too as Gunn has previously said that he hopes to use the same actors in their roles in live-action, animation, games and anywhere else they’re needed. Even if this isn’t the case, the casting is pretty great.

Ok, so first up, according to scooper Jeff Sneider, we have Black Phone and How to Train Your Dragon star Mason Thames as Dick Grayson/Ronin/Nightwing; next up we have Ghostbusters and The Walking Dead star Logan Kim as the younger Robin, Jason Todd. Moving on, we have Black-ish and Little star Marsai Martin as Barbara Gordon/Batgirl.

Now, while this one is being hailed as much more of a ‘maybe’ than the other three, word is that Star Trek and Dungeons and Dragons star Chris Pine has been offered the role of Bruce Wayne/Batman.

Pine has already had a strong relationship with the DC movies, having played Steve Trevor in both of the previous Wonder Woman movies under the then DCEU.

Now, yes, it’s likely these roles will remain voice acting and only in the Dynamic Duo world but I’m not going to lie, i really like all of these castings for the live-action roles too. Admittedly, I would not have seen Pine as Batman but it could work – he’s no stranger to action or suave roles, both of which are essential for Batman/Bruce Wayne.

The movie itself will be made by Swaybox Studios and will be a mix of live-action, stop motion and CGI, so it’s likely this will, if done right, be DC’s answer to Into the Spider-Verse.

This is one to keep an eye on, and I’m still leaning towards this actually being part of the wider DCU… but time will tell.

Dynamic Duo is set to hit theaters on June 30, 2028.
