While we all pace the floor in anticipation of Werwulf this Christmas, writer/director Robert Eggers has set his sights on a new project and it’s not the one you think. Not that one either. It’s a whole new project.
The man behind The VVitch, The Lighthouse, The Northman and Nosferatu has been eyeing two projects in recent months, A sequel to the David Bowie classic, Labyrinth and a new telling of Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol, but now we learn that his next project after Werwulf will be… Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet.

Famous for tackling monsters in a period-accurate and scary way – witches, werewulves, vampires and mermaids – Eggers is now hoping to tackle his scariest subject yet… teen romance!

After tackling witches, vampires and werewolves, Robert Eggers is tackling perhaps the scariest of monsters: teenage love.
To the surprise of no one, ‘this adaptation will feature actors speaking in Elizabethan English (aka early modern English), with lines straight from the play.’
So, yes, Eggers is once again going period accurate, which means it will likely be set in Verona, Italy, in the 1590s, when Shakespeare wrote the story of ill-fated lovers from the rival Capulet and Montague families.
No word as of yet on who will be cast or when filming will kick off, but expect Willem Dafoe and Anya Taylor-Joy to appear at the very least.
I adore Eggers’ films, so this is one I will definitely be excited for but I won’t lie, I would rather have seen him tackle the story of Ebenezer Scrooge or go big budget for the Labyrinth sequel. Neither of these projects has been mentioned in the news of Romeo and Juliet.
