Taika Waititi’s Star Wars movie no longering moving forward

In a time where nothing is certain, not even Star Wars movies, we’ve learned that another big project set in the galaxy far, far away is now ‘on ice’ and this is a big one.

While we had The Mandalorian and Grogu in cinemas earlier this summer and we have Starfighter coming in May, things still feel very dour in the world of Star Wars at the minute.

While it can’t be argued that Disney have run the franchise into the ground with sub-par movies and shows, like a football supporter watching his team being beaten at home for the tenth time in a row, I still hope that next time will be when it all turns around.

And with that in mind… Taika Waititi’s long-teased Star Wars movie is now no longer on the horizon.

Best known for making Jojo Rabbit, What We Do in the Shadows and Hunt for the Wilderpeople, Waititi is great when he’s doing his own projects but after the abysmal Thor: Ragnarok and the even worse Thor: Love and Thunder, I’m glad he’s no longer developing a Star Wars movie, though I still look forward to his next movie, Klara and the Sun, and whatever he does next.

On the press circuit for Klara, the subject of Star Wars came up and Waititi told Inverse that it’s no longer a priority for him or screenwriter Tony McNamara: “I hate to break this to you, but we’re going to actually put it on ice and we’re working on a different thing together.”

Welling ‘optimistic’ about Smallville animated series happening

McNamara and Waititi had been developing the movie together for some time, but then Waititi stepped back from writing to direct the movie, but nothing had ever come of it: “It’s very iced. I’ve got about four other movies I’m trying to do,” he added.

As for what the next movie is, Waititi’s publicist made sure he spilled no more details.

It’s been a tumultuous time for Star Wars projects as several have hit the wall in recent months but with the franchise heading for its 50th anniversary next year, I expect we will be getting some big news and reveals soon.

Thoughts? I know you have them and I wanna hear ’em all.

Perlman offers slight – slight! – glimmer of hope for Hellboy III

Marc is a self-confessed nerd. Ever since seeing Star Wars for the first time around 1979 he’s been an unapologetic fan of the Wars and still believes, with Clone Wars and now Underworld, we are yet to see the best Star Wars. He’s a dad of two who now doesn’t have the time (or money) to collect the amount of toys, comics, movies and books he once did, much to the relief of his long-suffering wife. In the real world he’s a graphic designer. He started Following the Nerd because he was tired of searching a million sites every day for all the best news that he loves and decided to create one place where you can go to get the whole lot. Secretly he longs to be sitting in the cockpit of his YT-1300 Corellian Transport ship with his co-pilot Chewie, roaming the universe, waiting for his next big adventure, but feels just at home watching cartoons with his kids….
