Perlman offers slight – slight! – glimmer of hope for Hellboy III

It’s been asked a million times and every time Ron Perlman has said that he’d always come back to play Hellboy one last time if it meant finishing Guillermo Del Toro’s trilogy. And his story hasn’t changed now, even at the age of 76.

Recently, Doug Jones, who played Abe Sapien alongside Perlman in 2004’s Hellboy and 2008’s Hellboy: The Golden Army, confirmed that he would be keen to return, as would Selma Blair, who played Liz, Hellboy’s true love, in the movies, saying:  “[Del Toro] knew what the third movie was going to look like. It would have been epic. That’s why it was a shame. And it turns out people really dug the two Hellboy movies. We didn’t make Marvel money.”

“We owe it to the fans and all want to come back,” Doug Jones talks Hellboy

Now Perlman himself has been asked about returning, and clearly he’s frustrated about being asked all the time, but he answers, saying he would love to, and even gives a little glimmer of hope at the end: “I’ve said so much about this and pissed off enough people, but I’ll say it again for you: the original movies were meant to be a trilogy. In Hellboy II, we left off at a very awkward moment where the Liz Sherman character is pregnant with twins, and none of the promises of Hellboy being summoned into existence to destroy the world has been addressed.

“That would all have been in the third film, and I’ll always advocate for the making of the third film. I’m not interested in doing any other version of Hellboy other than finishing the trilogy with Guillermo [del Toro]. It would be so epic. Like a Greek epic. Hubris, hamartia, destiny, nature vs nurture – it would be such an adventure. I’m 76 now, and if he comes to me and I’m 86, we’ll still do the motherf*cker.”

You have to admire him for, even at this age, and knowing how uncomfortable the Hellboy make-up/suit was, being so keen to return. However, the most interesting part for me, was when he was asked if he and Del Toro ever speak about doing a third movie, to which he simply replied: “No comment.”

To me, if he and Del Toro were not at least chatting about a possible final movie, he would simply have said ‘no’. The use of ‘no comment’ means that there must be some sort of discussion going on that he doesn’t want to address/reveal.

Now, just as Jones said in his interview: “I don’t want anyone to get excited; please don’t get excited. This does not mean that it’s happening,” even if he and Del Toro are in talks about Hellboy III, it doesn’t mean that it’s happening, but as someone who loved their vision of Mike Mignola’s iconic character(s), I am choosing to see it as hope that maybe, just maybe, that story will be finished in one way or another down the line.

Thoughts? I know you have them and I wanna hear ’em all.
