The return of Jack Burton in The Porkchop Express? Co-written by John Carpenter? It sounds like a dream come true…
Big Trouble In Little China is one of FTN’s favourite movies and now the sequel is in the works albeit in comic book form – well it only took 28 years (!!!).
Boom! Studios will unleash #1 on June 4th and it’s got quite a team behind it – the book will be co-written by The Goon (comic, not Seann William Scot movie) creator Eric Powell and Big Trouble creator and director John Carpenter. The art is by Brian Churilla who created The Secret History of D.B. Cooper.
According to EW Carpenter and Powell found they were kindred spirits: “I had a definite idea of what I wanted to do with it,” says Powell, “The minute we sat down and started talking, what he thought we should do was exactly what I had in mind. We were on the same page from the beginning.”
The coolest thing is that, as fans of the movie will know, the comic picks up immediately after the movie as we see Jack and his big rig have an uninvited passenger…
On revisiting Burton’s world, Carpenter said: “It’s a story and characters and a world that I love, because I really loved making the film. I hadn’t seen anything like it, and it gave me a chance to make a kung fu movie. I fell in love with kung fu films back in the ’70s. For as much fighting they had, they were also so fun and innocent. They had some outrageous stuff, and I thought what a great thing to be able to do in an American movie. It’s an innocence, a purity of character. I really love them.”
Big Trouble In Little China #1 hits stores on June 4th and will have five different covers drawn by Powell, Joe Quinones, Chris Weston, Terry Dodson, and Emi Yonemura Brown.
Check out the opening pages below… if they can come even close to the work Erik Burnham and co are doing at IDW with Ghostbusters then I think we are all in for a treat.
“China is here?! I don’t even know what the hell that means!”
