When Jennifer Tilly recently spoke about the cancelled Chucky TV series, she cryptically said: “The television series just ended, but I know for a fact there is more Chucky and Tiffany in the works. The gruesome twosome.” And now we know what she was talking about.
Tilly, who joined the Child’s Play/Chucky franchise in 1998 with Bride of Chucky, in which she played Tiffany Valentine, the lover of Charles Lee Ray aka Chucky (Brad Dourif), who eventually also became a murderous doll, must have had a heads up on writer Don Mancini’s plans for what comes next for the murderous toy duo.
At this weekend’s Steel City Con in Pennsylvania, Mancini appeared and talked about the plans to return to the fan-favourite franchise, saying he is currently writing the killer doll’s sixth movie outing and it ‘will harken back to the approach of his 2013 film Curse of Chucky. The sixth installment in the franchise initially positioned itself as something of a full-on reboot before firmly connecting itself to the previous installments’.
Don Mancini promises Chucky ‘will be back’ after series cancellation
It’s unlikely he means reboot in the way that the recent Child’s Play movie starring Mark Hamill as the voice of a new, weird-looking Chucky (who is not the same ontinuity/universe as Mancini’s movies) did, but rather in a way that means previous knowledge of the series won’t be necessary as this will be a new jumping-on point but will still, as he hinted, tie into the events of the previous movies and the recntly cancelled (but much-loved) TV series.
Bloody Disgusting is reporting that Mancini also plans to harken back to the first two Child’s Play movies and to make the new outing a scary affair, rather than the more campy route it has taken in recent years. He also plans on bringing Chucky back to the big screen.
I’ve not been keeping up with Chucky in recent years, though I hear good things about the movies and the TV series, so I’m a bit out of the loop on what exactly has been happening, but I might try to get ll caught up before the doll everyone loves to hate returns.
Thoughts? I know you have them and I wanna hear ’em all.
