Don Mancini promises Chucky ‘will be back’ after series cancellation

Bad news for Child’s Play, Chucky and horror fans in general as Syfy and USA Network have revealed that their hit series, Chucky, will not be returning for a fourth season.

The series, based on the – 0r rather continuing on from – the Child’s Play movies featured murderous doll Chucky, possessed by the spirit of the murderous Charles Lee Ray, played, then voiced, by the great Stephen Dourif, has had three insane seasons and was much-loved by fans old and new but it seems that the adoration wasn’t enough to bring Chucky back for a fourth glorious, gore-filled season.

Series creator/executive producer Don Mancini took to social media ro say how sad he was at the news: “I’m heartbroken over the news that Chucky won’t be coming back for a fourth season but am so grateful for the killer three years we did have.

“I’d like to thank UCP/Syfy/Peacock/Eat the Cat, our awesome cast and Toronto-based crew — the best in the business — and finally, to our amazing fans, a big bloody hug. Your incredible #RenewChucky campaign really warmed Chucky’s cold heart. Chucky will return! He ALWAYS comes back.”

It seems that Chucky died on this outing more due to budget than viewing figures. As Deadline put it: Chucky was the last higher-end, UCP-produced original scripted series on the network. The other one, Resident Alien, recently moved to USA with a significant budget reduction.

Amid the sobering reality of the declining ad-supported cable business in the cord-cutting era, Syfy is now relying on Canadian (SurrealEstate, the upcoming Revival) and modestly budgeted independent productions.

This is far from the first time Chucky has faced insurmountable odds including being named in a horrible murder case, to begin rebooted, but Mancini really loves this little psycho, so I have no doubt he will see Chucky resurrected again.

Until then, we remain your friends… to the end.
