Big Finish casts new actor to play John Hurt’s The War Doctor in new Doctor Who adventures

October 14th, 2020 by Marc Comments

Oh, in a ballsy movie, Big Finish Productions have recast one of the most iconic voices ever to grace a screen… or audio adventure.

The company, which is best known for producing Doctor Who audio content, has been doing a series based on The Time War – set up in the Doctor Who TV series – which starred the late, great John Hurt in the role of the War Doctor.

Hurt played the role in the 50th anniversary movie, The Day of the Doctor, throwing out all continuity and introducing an all-new, previously unknown version of The Doctor sitting between Paul McGann’s and Christopher Eccleston’s Doctors – but it was John Hurt playing the Doctor, so no-one cared.

His legacy was so great and the set up of him being involved in the great time war was so tantalising, that Big Finish have created a whole series based around him and the war.

A series that was a big hit until Hurt’s tragic death in 2017 of pancreatic cancer, aged 77, when, obviously, Big Finish had to draw a line under the story.

Until now.

Now newcomer Jonathon Carley has been cast as the younger War Doctor in a new series called The War Doctor Begins.

We did of course see McGann’s Doctor regenerate into the War Doctor in the short film Night of the Doctor (here) but we never saw what happened to him before he became the grizzled warrior we met in The Day of the Doctor.

But we will now.

What say you all? Will you be picking up the series? Or is the idea of someone else in the role too jarring for you? Let me know your thoughts.

Doctor Who: The War Doctor Begins is set to be released starting from June 2021.

Oh, and if you’re wondering if Carley can pull it off? Check him out below playing The Doctor… he’s pretty damned good.
