Christopher Eccleston returning for more Doctor Who adventures at Big Finish

September 16th, 2021 by Marc Comments

Despite recently doubling down on the fact that he will not be returning to play The Doctor onscreen again, ninth Doctor, and the man who helped bring the series back before Chris Chibnall and co ran it right back into the ground, Christopher Eccleston will be returning as the character for Big Finish Productions.

The star, who famously left under bad circumstances after just one series, returned to the role this year in audio form, returning for four adventures for Big Finish, who are still creating great Doctor Who stories.

“Just before Christmas in 2020, I walked into a small recording studio in an industrial estate in North London. Me and the sound engineer looked at each other and we smiled and say, ‘Let’s go!’ Then I started playing the Ninth Doctor again, and I loved it,” Eccleston said on the return.

“It’s been one of the great joys for me of the past year. It’s a lovely way to do it, so I’m coming back to record more.”

Trust us, you may not hear it, but an entire fandom is cheering!

This is great news as Big Finish gets to take the Doctors on adventures and worlds that they never got to explore on-screen and feature previous Doctors such as Sylvester McCoy, David Tennant, Tom Baker, Peter Davison and Colin Baker, so they’re not exactly a fly-by-night fan-fiction set-up.

The new adventures will be available in 2022 and 2023, with producer David Richardson adding: “From an old railway station to the seas of Titan, to a very unusual furniture store in the present day, it’s another trip of a lifetime – and I can’t wait to be back in the studio again in October, where we will bring these words to brilliant life. Recording the first season with Chris was one of the happiest times at Big Finish, and I feel privileged to be going back for more.”

I’ve already got his first two adventures and will be picking up all of them as they become available so yes, I reckon this is ‘Fantastic!’ news.
