Paul Dini, mostly known for his work on Batman: The Animated Series, recently announced that he is writing Dark Night: A True Batman Story and Batman isn’t the main character…Dini himself is. He also announced that the story is based around true events. Dini was mugged in LA by two men while he was walking home.

The story will not only tell the story of the mugging, but the weeks of healing after the fact as well. Batman will be the parental figure who chides the boy for not fighting back, but the Joker will urge him to hide in his apartment away from the rest of the world. Dini elaborated:

“What makes Batman and what makes other superheroes work is the myth that when life is at its lowest, and when you need a hero, a hero swings down and helps you. And I didn’t have that.

Here I am writing these stories for an audience that loves this form, in comics, in animation, but now I was saying to myself, ‘I can’t go on with this. I don’t believe in it anymore. There is no hero for me. Where is my hero?’

The answer is: you have to be your own hero.”

This may be the most personal Batman story we’ll ever read and it’s in the best of hands with Dini writing it. The book will be released under DC’s Vertigo imprint in June of 2016.

Are you guys excited for this story? How about for the return of Dini to Batman? Let me know in the comments!
