COMIC REVIEW: FTN reviews Damian: Son of Batman #3

January 4th, 2014 by Irwin Fletcher Comments

Writer & Artist: Andy Kubert

Published by DC Comics

You know what? This issue took a turn for the weird…ridiculously weird. It is probably the most entertaining thing I’ve read in ages. All I know is I can’t stop laughing and shouting profanity-laced questions that really just revolve around the thought of, “What the HECK is going on?!”

For an artist-turned-writer, Kubert is going a pretty good job at holding his own, doing both duties. Sure, some dialogue is awkward, but the storyline is solid and simple, and the art is pretty spectacular, even if it isn’t always for me personally. And let’s all talk about the big elephant in the room: Alfred the cat is literally Alfred the butler, and this is the GREATEST turn of events I have ever read. Damian’s reaction was 100% priceless, and I’ve never wanted a comic series about the adventures of Damian and his cat (and other pets) more than right now.

As I mentioned, I sometimes find Kubert’s art as not really for me, but I found this to be his strongest issue. Loved the details of Damian’s injuries when he was on the table, and then the double of him crashing through the bus window was absolutely breathtaking.

I really like where this utterly crazy story is going, and more than a little bummed that there’s only one issue left of this tale.
