Finally! This is the issue I’ve been waiting for since Baz’s introduction. Green Lantern is easily my favorite book ever, but I have to admit, the solo adventures of Baz were starting to wear thin on me. He’s a good character, but I don’t care to see him jaunting around the US by himself, I need the Corps and some space adventure. With the Guardians gone mad there’s no Oa for him to report to, but Johns finally teams him up with another Lantern, which will do for now. The squirrel Lantern B’dg makes his way to earth looking for Hal Jordan, but finds Baz instead.

The Rise of the Third Army arc has been moving pretty slow, but it finally kicks into gear as it comes close to its end with this issue. Baz learns some things about being a Green Lantern, finally, and we are starting to get a bit of clarity on Hal and Sinestro’s situation. Of course the climax of the issue is Baz saving his brother in law, we all knew he would pull it off so it fell a bit flat, but it seems that Baz has a potential that we haven’t seen in a Green Lantern before.

The climax was pretty good but I found my focus was drawn to the more subtle happenings of this issue. Baz’s choice to carry a gun because he doesn’t fully trust his ring was in a small way a key moment for me. He never had the proper training so he doesn’t quite understand the full potential of the ring, even though B’dg points it out to him. I’m thinking though since Johns chose to include this, could it be foreshadow that it may come in handy sooner or later? We also have the Book of Black in GL hands so we may be close to saving Hal and Sinestro, which I’m really excited about. I also got a slight chuckle out of B’dg communicating with an Earth squirrel and it actually working to Baz’s disbelief.

Overall I really liked this issue because it finally takes us in a direction that I have been waiting for since Baz’s debut. A good story combined with great art can only be a winner.
