I gotta admit to getting a bit choked up writing the review for the final issue of Journey Into Mystery. Over the years the title has had its ups and downs with different teams, story arcs and characters, but in my humble opinion these last couple of years Journey has been one of Marvel’s best. From Kid Loki to Sif, from battling Surtur to dabbling in berserker magic, Journey Into Mystery gave us all a glimpse into the day-to-day adventures of the Asgardian people. The final issue, #655, wraps up the Sif/Gaea/Beta Ray Bill arc quite nicely with Sif convincing Bill to give her time to convince the monstrous form of Gaea to learn from and nurture life and not destroy it as if it were some kind of problem to be solved. Sif has grown during her issues of Journey, going from reckless warrior thirsty for blood to protector of Midgard and its people with a heart as big as her warrior’s rage. The issue concludes with some great dialogue boxes and some comic relief on Sif’s part at the end. I don’t want to get too spoilery here so I will leave out any plot lines and merely suggest picking up this great, historic ending to one of Marvel’s longest running titles.

Kathryn Immonen, Valerio Schiti, Jordie Bellaire, Clayton Cowles and Jeff Dukal came together and created some of the best storytelling in Marvel Comics and in my opinion it was every bit as good as Gillen’s run. In fact I wish to convey gratitude and thanks to all past and present creators of this incredible book. Journey Into Mystery is one of those classic, reliable titles that you can practically measure eras of time by and sadly now it’s gone.

I will say that #655 was a great issue. Bill learns a valuable lesson of appreciating what you have while you have it and Sif? Sif is just the badass savior of us all that we knew her to be all along.

As I have mentioned in videos, on Panel 2 Panel and in previous reviews, Journey Into Mystery in its incredible history has been cancelled, brought back, renumbered and rebooted a number of times in the past so here’s hoping for the future of the title…also be on the lookout for Sif along with the Warriors Three, Thor and Loki in the upcoming title Thor: The Crown of Fools.

Personally I will be a bit sad to see this Marvel staple go but I am satisfied with the ending of the arc and give the final issue #655 of Journey Into Mystery my highest rating…
