DC to rebrand JLA as Justice League Canada

Get ready for Justice League Canada!

In a report by Newsarama.com, the Justice League Of America will be trading in the stars and stripes for the maple leaf. In spring of 2014 the JLA will move north and will be rechristened the Justice League of Canada. Jeff Lemire, who really came into his own at DC writing Animal Man, will take over writing duties form Geoff Johns (Sigh, another book he’s leaving.). Lemire, a Canadian native, is really pumped to do this book saying to the Toronto Star, “This is like my ultimate dream job. It sounds like a joke and something like this would never happen, but it is actually happening”

He was also excited to deliver an authentic Canadian cultural experience after books like Marvel’s Alpha Flight gave us stereotypical Canadian characters, “It’s not really like Alpha Flight, as we’re not creating a bunch of very Canadian characters,” Lemire says. “Like those characters are all almost clichéd Canadian archetypes. This is still very much set in the regular Justice League universe and the team will still have some of the bigger named superheroes, but they will actually be located in Canada now, and there will be a couple of new members who are Canadian. So obviously as a Canadian, and as a Canadian storyteller, it’s something I’m very proud of.”

The new character is said to be a teen that Lemire says will reflect a real part of Canada’s cultural identity. Another character that is making his New52 debut is none other then Adam Strange, now a Canadian. The rest of the team is said to be whoever is left of the original line up after the Trinity War and the Forever Evil events. Lemire promises the line up will be a good mix of well-known and more obscure characters.

So what do you guys think? Is it about time that DC Comics gives a friendly nod to the U.S.’ neighbors to the north?

Marc is a self-confessed nerd. Ever since seeing Star Wars for the first time around 1979 he’s been an unapologetic fan of the Wars and still believes, with Clone Wars and now Underworld, we are yet to see the best Star Wars. He’s a dad of two who now doesn’t have the time (or money) to collect the amount of toys, comics, movies and books he once did, much to the relief of his long-suffering wife. In the real world he’s a graphic designer. He started Following the Nerd because he was tired of searching a million sites every day for all the best news that he loves and decided to create one place where you can go to get the whole lot. Secretly he longs to be sitting in the cockpit of his YT-1300 Corellian Transport ship with his co-pilot Chewie, roaming the universe, waiting for his next big adventure, but feels just at home watching cartoons with his kids….
