Back in 2023, Netflix gave us Skull Island, the official Monsterverse animated series and as someone who loves that world, I (and many others) really enjoyed it.
However, ending on a cliffhanger, the series set up big things that never got resolved and, while it was just an animated series, the story belonged in the bigger universe and fans demanded a resolve.
And the gods of Skull Island have answered, it seems.

Titan Comics has revealed that, kicking off in June this year, Return to Skull Island will pick up the story, giving fans the answers they’ve waited two years for.
Look, while it’s not a second series, it is nice that Legendary and Titan Comics have found away to, unlike other franchises, make sure there are no loose ends and the fans know the whole story.
And as if that’s not enough, it’s being written by the man who pretty much invented the lore of Transformers, Simon Furman… now that’s a welcome addition to the Monsterverse for sure!
The press release is below, the first look at the cover of issue 1 is above and there’s some of the interior art below too.
Monsterverse set for more Kaiju adventures on both big and small screens
Titan Comics and Legendary Comics are excited to announce that the Monsterverse expansion continues with RETURN TO SKULL ISLAND, a brand-new comic book series set in Legendary’s Skull Island: The Animated Series universe (currently streaming on Netflix).
Issue #1 will debut in comic shops on June 4, 2025, featuring a cover by superstar artist Inhyuk Lee, bringing fans deeper into the world of Kong and the mysteries of Skull Island.
Set against a backdrop of giant monsters and deadly intrigue, the comic follows a group of survivors stranded on the perilous island in the South Pacific. As they uncover its dark secrets, they face life-threatening challenges and fight for survival in a land where every creature is a threat—including Kong himself. The series is written by Simon Furman (Transformers) and illustrated by Christopher Jones (Doctor Who: Once Upon a Time Lord).
Titan also revealed a timeline for when the new comic fits into the Monsterverse story and it’s below, though it is worth noting that this does not include the official Monsterverse comic from Legendary Comics or the recent Kong: Survivor Instinct video game.
Titan Comics editor Louis Yamani shared his excitement about the new comic series: “Skull Island’s shadows hide untold stories, fierce battles, and creatures unlike anything seen before. Marrying brilliant illustrations and epic storytelling, we see a new side to Kong and his kingdom. We can’t wait to share more this June!”
“Partnering with Titan Comics on Return to Skull Island allows us to expand the Monsterverse in exciting new ways. Bringing Skull Island from TV to comics lets us dive deeper into its mysteries, offering fans thrilling new adventures in Kong’s world,” said, Robert Napton, SVP & Publisher, Legendary Comics.
This is very exciting news and I cannot wait to jump back into this story.
