Barbarella being planned as a Amazon Studios series

January 21st, 2014 by Irwin Fletcher Comments

Deadline reports that after a number of recent attempts to bring the sci-fi heroine to the big screen, Barbarella appears to have found a home more appropriate to its original serial format. Amazon Studios is looking at developing the project as a pilot with the hopes of turning Barbarella into an ongoing series.

Barbarella made her debut in 1962 in a French graphic magazine written and illustrated by Jean-Claude Forest, and her adventures have been published around the world. In 1968 director Roger Vadim’s feature film version, produced by Dino De Laurentiis starred Jane Fonda.

The project has been in the works for a year and a half, and has a pilot script by Skyfall scribes Neal Purvis and Robert Wade. Nicolas Winding Refn (Drive), previously attached to direct a feature version, will executive produce alongside Martha De Laurentiis, whose late husband Dino produced the 1968 movie.
