Ewan McGregor is Black Mask in the Birds of Prey movie!

November 2nd, 2018 by Marc Comments

We’ve been following the casting of the Birds of Prey movie with growing excitement and wondering who, oh who, would be playing the villain… Black Mask.

And now we know. And it’s as beautiful as the female cast!

Yes, Obi-Wan himself, Ewan McGregor, is all but signed up to play the mob boss of Gotham City.

So far we have Jurnee Smollett-Bell and Mary Elizabeth Winstead as Black Canary and Huntress along with Rosie Perez as Renee Montoya. We’re still waiting to hear who will be playing the young Cassandra Cain, the girl who will one day be the OTHER Batgirl.

Oh, and of course, we also have Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn too.

So, this movie is heading for one of the most unmissable comic book movies in the next decade.

In DC Comics, Black Mask is the criminal alias of Roman Sionis, who murdered his wealthy, status-obsessed parents to take control of the family corporation, then lost everything when he proved to be a terrible businessman. Seeking revenge on the people he blamed for his own failures — in particular Bruce Wayne and Wayne Enterprises — he returns, hidden behind an ebony black mask, at the head of a gang called the False Face Society.

Cathy Yan is set to direct, the director of Dead Pig has been speaking about the script and  it seems she knew she had to take the gig: “I could not put the script down, it had so much dark humor to it which a lot of my work does, and there are themes of female empowerment which are so strong  and relateable. So I went in with, not with confidence, but at least a sense that I belonged in the room, that somehow magically in terms of timing and luck that this opportunity was open to me and I was definitely going to make the best of it.”

Yen also confirmed that the movie would be R-Rated and, as we said above, will feature Cassandra Cain.

If you’re wondering what the plot will be, read our rumoured story (here) and get ready because this is going to be great.

Birds of Prey opens on Feb. 7, 2020.
