The first official images from the forthcoming Tomb Raider reboot have been released.

Alicia Vekander takes on the lead role as the adventurous Lara Croft who was first brought to the big screen by Angelina Jolie.

The story takes place seven years after Lara’s father disappears, with 21-year-old refusing to inherit his business empire and choosing instead to attend college while tiding herself over working as a bike courier. Eventually, she’s inspired to investigate what happened to him, and kicks off her search at his last-known location, a tomb on an island off the coast of Japan.

When I was asked to take on this role I got really excited – Lara Croft is a truly iconic character,” Vikander told Vanity Fair. “I think people can identify with her for lots of different reasons, but for me I very much see her as a model for many young women. She’s trying to carve out her place in the world and connect her future with her past.”

Roar Uthang directs with a supporting cast of Dominic West, Walton Goggins and Daniel Wu.

Tomb Raider will be released on March 16 next year.

Marc is a self-confessed nerd. Ever since seeing Star Wars for the first time around 1979 he’s been an unapologetic fan of the Wars and still believes, with Clone Wars and now Underworld, we are yet to see the best Star Wars. He’s a dad of two who now doesn’t have the time (or money) to collect the amount of toys, comics, movies and books he once did, much to the relief of his long-suffering wife. In the real world he’s a graphic designer. He started Following the Nerd because he was tired of searching a million sites every day for all the best news that he loves and decided to create one place where you can go to get the whole lot. Secretly he longs to be sitting in the cockpit of his YT-1300 Corellian Transport ship with his co-pilot Chewie, roaming the universe, waiting for his next big adventure, but feels just at home watching cartoons with his kids….
