The first official images from the forthcoming Tomb Raider reboot have been released.
Alicia Vekander takes on the lead role as the adventurous Lara Croft who was first brought to the big screen by Angelina Jolie.
The story takes place seven years after Lara’s father disappears, with 21-year-old refusing to inherit his business empire and choosing instead to attend college while tiding herself over working as a bike courier. Eventually, she’s inspired to investigate what happened to him, and kicks off her search at his last-known location, a tomb on an island off the coast of Japan.
“When I was asked to take on this role I got really excited – Lara Croft is a truly iconic character,” Vikander told Vanity Fair. “I think people can identify with her for lots of different reasons, but for me I very much see her as a model for many young women. She’s trying to carve out her place in the world and connect her future with her past.”
Roar Uthang directs with a supporting cast of Dominic West, Walton Goggins and Daniel Wu.
Tomb Raider will be released on March 16 next year.
