We have known since last July that a Gothan City PD series was in development that would take place in the same universe as Matt Reeves’ upcoming The Batman movie (here) and now it seems it may do more than just act as a companion piece.
Casey Bloys, HBO Max content chief, in a new interview about the movie, said: “Matt Reeves is obviously a producer on Gotham City PD. We don’t want to reserve characters just for films or for TV. There should be kind of some fluidity between them. So that is the idea. I mean, we’re in very early stages on that. So I don’t want to suggest that any one character will be. But yes, that is, generally speaking, that is the idea, that there will be crossover.”
What this means for The Batman is that the storytelling possibilities have just massively increased, a total overlap sets up a world of possibilities with characters being introduced in one and properly explored in the other, especially with The Batman being widely speculated as the first of a trilogy.
HBO Max announced today that it has given a series commitment to an original DC drama set in the Gotham City police department from The Batman filmmaker Matt Reeves, Boardwalk Empire creator Terence Winter, The Batman producer Dylan Clark, and Warner Bros. Television. The groundbreaking television series to be written by Winter is set in the world Reeves is creating for The Batman feature film and will build upon the motion picture’s examination of the anatomy of corruption in Gotham City, ultimately launching a new Batman universe across multiple platforms. The series provides an unprecedented opportunity to extend the world established in the movie and further explore the myriad of compelling and complex characters of Gotham. This marks the first television project for Reeves under his recently announced overall deal with the Warner Bros. Television Group.
Matt Reeves said: “This is an amazing opportunity, not only to expand the vision of the world I am creating in the film, but to explore it in the kind of depth and detail that only a longform format can afford — and getting to work with the incredibly talented Terence Winter, who has written so insightfully and powerfully about worlds of crime and corruption, is an absolute dream.”
