Oh, I love this bit of casting news!
We here are FTN HQ have been waiting for more news on the upcoming Amazon Prime’s Blade Runner 2099 and now we have some brilliant news as Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon and Everything, Everywhere, All At Once star Michelle Yeoh has signed on to lead the series as a character called Olwen, a Replicant near the end of her life.
And here was me thinking I couldn’t be anymore excited for this series.
The series marks the fourth on-screen dive into the Blade Runner universe after 1982’s Blade Runner, 2017’s Blade Runner 2049 and the 2021 animated series Black Lotus; there have also been numerous books, games and comics set in the universe.
The series is based on the original movie’s director Tony Scott’s original idea for a third movie and when it was announced as going into production in 2021, Alcon Entertainment co-founders Andrew Kosove and Broderick Johnson, also producing, said: “We are beyond excited to continue to extend the ‘Blade Runner’ canon into a new realm with the provocative storyline that Silka has created. Audiences first discovered Ridley Scott’s brilliant vision for ‘Blade Runner’ 40 years ago, and since then, it has become one of the most influential science-fiction films of all time.
“Denis Villeneuve’s follow-up sequel, ‘Blade Runner 2049’,then became one of the best-reviewed sequels of all time. So, we recognize that we have a very high bar to meet with this next installment. Together with Silka and our partners at Amazon, and Scott Free Productions, we hope that we can live up to that standard and delight audiences with the next generation of ‘Blade Runner’.”
The series was written by Shining Girls’ Silka Luisa who is also showrunner.
