Shogun director signs on for Amazon’s Blade Runner 2099 series

April 9th, 2024 by Marc Comments

Finally some news on one of my most anticipated TV shows of the next few years…

It seems that Jonathan van Tulleken, director of the first two episodes of the absolutely stunning Shogun, has signed on to direct the first two episodes of Blade Runner 2099 at Amazon.

The episodes were originally set to be directed by Jeremy Podeswa but he left after scheduling issues due to the writers’ strike last year.

The series marks the fourth on screen dive into the Blade Runner universe after 1982’s Blade Runner, 2017’s Blade Runner 2049 and the 2021 animated series Black Lotus; there have also been numerous books, games and comics set in the universe.

The series is based on the original movie’s director Tony Scott’s original idea for a third movie and when it was announced as going into production in 2021, Alcon Entertainment co-founders Andrew Kosove and Broderick Johnson, also producing, said: “We are beyond excited to continue to extend the ‘Blade Runner’ canon into a new realm with the provocative storyline that Silka has created. Audiences first discovered Ridley Scott’s brilliant vision for ‘Blade Runner’ 40 years ago, and since then, it has become one of the most influential science-fiction films of all time.

“Denis Villeneuve’s follow-up sequel, ‘Blade Runner 2049’,then became one of the best-reviewed sequels of all time. So, we recognize that we have a very high bar to meet with this next installment. Together with Silka and our partners at Amazon, and Scott Free Productions, we hope that we can live up to that standard and delight audiences with the next generation of ‘Blade Runner’.”

The series was written by Shining Girls’ Silka Luisa who is also showrunner.

Are you excited for a live-action Blade Runner TV series? Let me know.

And remember, more human than human, that’s our motto.

It’s happening! Amazon are making Ridley Scott’s Blade Runner live-action TV series!
