Well, it’s happening, we’re getting a live-action Blade Runner series and I’m rather excited about the whole thing!

We reported back in April (here) that Blade Runner director Ridley Scott was pitching a sequel to Blade Runner 2049 in the form of a TV series called Blade Runner 2099 which is based on an idea he had for a third movie in the series. And now it seems that Amazon Prime has picked the series up!

While little is known about the series for now, it is, obviously, set fifty years after the events of Denis Villeneuve’s stunning sequel and will have Scott onboard as executive producer under his Scott Free Productions banner. Silka Luisa serves as showrunner and also executive producer. Blade Runner 2049 co-writer Michael Green is also executive producing, so the talent, all well connected in the BR universe, is there.

Blade Runner animates series, Black Lotus, looks absolutely gorgeous

Alcon Entertainment co-founders Andrew Kosove and Broderick Johnson, also producing, said: “We are beyond excited to continue to extend the ‘Blade Runner’ canon into a new realm with the provocative storyline that Silka has created. Audiences first discovered Ridley Scott’s brilliant vision for ‘Blade Runner’ 40 years ago, and since then, it has become one of the most influential science-fiction films of all time. Denis Villeneuve’s follow-up sequel, ‘Blade Runner 2049,’ then became one of the best-reviewed sequels of all time. So, we recognize that we have a very high bar to meet with this next installment. Together with Silka and our partners at Amazon, and Scott Free Productions, we hope that we can live up to that standard and delight audiences with the next generation of ‘Blade Runner.’”

Along with the animated series Blade Runner: Black Lotus and the comic books from Titan Comics, with novels on the way, the Blade Runner universe is really expanding and, due to the nature of the world, it can tell a million different stories set in the dystopian world that Scott introduced us to in 1982.

What a time to be alive!
