Original screenwriter finally bringing us an official Buckaroo Banzai sequel novel

March 11th, 2021 by Marc Comments

Coming from an era that gave us the likes of Ghostbusters, Big Trouble in Little China and The Terminator, 1984’s cult classic The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai Across the 8th Dimension has managed to endure and remain a much-loved, if somewhat bewildering, classic over the near 40 years since it hit our screens.

The movie, which starred Peter Wellar as physicist, neurosurgeon, test pilot, and rock star, Dr Buckaroo Banzai and has a cast of 80s legends including Ellen Barkin, John Lithgow, Jeff Goldblum and Christopher Lloyd, ended on a cliffhanger that promised Banzai would finally face-off against the World Crime League, et al but, alas, all these years later, we still don’t know what was to happen.

Until now.

The film’s original screenwriter and novelist Earl Mac Rauch have teamed up with Dark Horse Comics to bring us a prose sequel to the movie, The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai Against the World Crime League, et al: A Compendium of Evil, and will finally see that legendary, unseen, showdown happen.

Still mourning the losses of his beloved Penny Priddy and his surrogate father Professor Hikita, Buckaroo Banzai must also contend with the constant threat of attack from his immortal nemesis Hanoi Xan, ruthless leader of the World Crime League. To make matters worse, Planet 10 warrior queen John Emdall has sent her Lectroid legions against Earth with a brutal ultimatum. Or is her true target Buckaroo Banzai? As the apocalyptic threats continue to mount, only Buckaroo and his Hong Kong Cavaliers stand in the way of global destruction—or in the words of one of the movie’s iconic lines: “Laugh-a while you can, monkey boy!”

The book will be written from the point-of-view of The Reno Kid, one of Banzai’s Hong Kong Cavaliers, and as if it were relayed to novelist EM Rauch who wrote the novel adaptation of the movie and always promised a sequel… which arrives here this August 10th.

Just goes to show, never say never these days…

He’s a dad of two who now doesn’t have the time (or money) to collect the amount of toys, comics, movies and books he once did, much to the relief of his long-suffering wife.
