Although a previous Deadline report indicated that both Benedict Cumberbatch and Tom Hardy were on the short list to play Dr. Strange, no other names on that list have come up. Although others in the past, have been rumored.
Now,TheWrap is reporting that three-time Academy Award nominee Joaquin Phoenix is being considering for the role of Sorceror Supreme. No deal is in place yet, but hopefully we’ll find out Saturday evening during Marvel Studios’ San Diego Comic-Con panel.
Edgar Ramirez was also mentioned as a possible for a role. Since he was asked if his Deliver Us From Evil director, Scott Derrickson who is directing Doctor Strange, had approached him about being in the film. Ramirez’s reply was a simple:
“We’re talking, we’ve been talking.”
Many, this nerd included, thought he would be great for Strange’s arch-nemesis Baron Mordo.
Stan Lee and Steve Ditko created the character in 1963 as brilliant neurosurgeon who, following a car accident loses precision in his hands. His quest to regain his former skills sets Strange on a path to become the Sorcerer Supreme, the primary protector of Earth against magical and mystical threats, with powers of sorcery, mysticism, and martial arts.
Although no release date for Doctor Strange has been announced, it seems to work with July 8th, 2016 that Marvel has set aside.
UPDATE:
Variety are saying that Phoenix is definitely in talks at this point. We’re feeling sure there’s an announcement coming tomorrow at SDCC… but don’t quote us on that
