RUMOR: Third Star Wars spin-off film called Red Five?

May 16th, 2014 by Irwin Fletcher Comments

So as the first official day of filming begins on Star Wars: Episode VII in Abu Dhabi, we get word about the Star Wars spin-off films.

We already know the plan is to alternate yearly between Saga and spin-off films, beginning with Episode VII in 2015. It was last week that Disney Ceo Bob Iger confirmed at least three spin-off films.

Now according to a report from the website Star Wars Union, Hasbro held a private presentation which may have also confirmed the three spin-off films.

The report states in 2016 there will be a Boba Fett solo movie, in 2018 one simply called Solo and in 2020 a film called Red Five.

We’ve been hearing about a Boba fett and Han Solo film since the spin-offs were announced. But Red Five is new. We know that Red Five was the call sign Luke Skywalker used in Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope during the Battle of Yavin.

So a spin-off about a squadron of X-Wing fighters? Could this be a Rogue Squadron movie? They did approach Wedge about being in Episode VII.

Another possibility is it may be a Luke Skywalker spin-off film. But Kathleen Kennedy has said that characters in the stand alone films will not be in the Saga films:

“There is no attempt being made to carry characters (from the standalone films) in and out of the saga episodes. Consequently, from the creative standpoint, it’s a roadmap that George made pretty clear.”

So a Luke spin-off seems unlikely. I think a young Han Solo doesn’t count , as technically the young Han would not be in the Saga films, just his older self. So why not a young Luke film? We met Luke in Episode IV when has was pretty young, and he was literally complaining how nothing ever happens.

Doesn’t sound like movie material to me.
