The Wrap has now confirmed the rumor via multiple sources, that Tim Burton is indeed in talks to direct Beetlejuice 2!  They also add that Michael Keaton is expected to reprise his role as well.

Most fans agree that without Tim Burton and star Michael Keaton, there isn’t much reason to do a Beetlejuice 2, it just wouldn’t be the same. It is a sentiment that writers Grahame-Smith and Katzenberg share. They explained in 2011:

“When Warner Bros. came to us about it, we said the only way we’d do it if we got Tim [Burton’s] blessing and involvement, and we got that, and the star of the movie has to be Michael Keaton as Beetlejuice, and it’s a true continuation 26 years later. Not just throwing him in as a cameo going, “Hey, it’s me. I endorse this movie.” We’re not there yet [with Keaton] because we don’t have a film to present to him.”

Now according to Scmoes Know, Tim Burton definitely wants to helm the sequel. Apparently they have a VERY RELIABLEsource (their caps) :

“…we can happily confirm that Tim Burton IS looking to direct the sequel himself. No word yet on scheduling or if the movie is near a green light in the development phase. What we know is that Burton wants to do both ‘Miss Peregrine’s Home For Peculiar Children’ and the new ‘Beetlejuice.’ “

Burton has mentioned a couple of times in the past that he’s spoken with the writers, but this is the first we’ve heard that he may direct. It was previously rumored that Keaton would return, but no word yet if any of the rest of the cast will return. The new film is a direct sequel that will pick up twenty years or so after the events of the original. No release date has been scheduled at this time.

What do you think of the rumor?
