The Soska sisters are staring it up among the Scream fans again, as rumours of their involvement in the upcoming Scream 8 continue to swirl around.
So, just to catch you up, a couple of months ago, the film-making sisters became hotly tipped to be the directors of the eighth movie in the successful horror franchise when they replied to a rumour that they were in talks to direct with a pair of wide-open-eye emojis, and since then, they have been keeping pretty consistently in contact with the Scream fanbase on X and today, they had two interesting posts.
Skeet Ulrich talks original Scream 7 plan and his planned return as Billy Loomis
The Canadian twins who are known for directing, producing and even writing low-budget gory horrors such as Dead Hooker in a Trunk and American Mary asked fans earlier today: “Good morning everyone, but especially SCREAM FANS. Y’all are so much fun to talk to. We asked for your most passionate responses to the series. Interesting to see who you want to see have their story end. Who you want killed. And who was your favorite killer?”

Of course, we’re now wondering if the sisters are indeed involved in the movie and are trying to gauge fans’ desires for what comes next in the series.
Then they addressed recent comments from Skeet Ulrich, who played original Ghostface killer, Billy Loomis, in 1996’s Scream and then returned to the role in 2022’s Scream as the father of Sam Carpenter (Melissa Barrera) who she sees in her head, especially when she’s in danger or experiencing rage.
Before Barrera was fired from 2026’s Scream 7 (I’m not getting into it, google is your friend (not really)), there were rumours that Sam was destined to become a Ghostface killer herself, becoming the first hero to become a villain in the series and, given how she was in Scream 6, the idea makes a lot of sense.
Anyways, had Sam become a killer, there’s a strong chance she would have been guided by her (imagined) dead father, Billy Loomis, in fact, this was pretty much confirmed by Ulrich in a 2025 interview ahead of Scream 7, when he said: “When we talked about coming back for 5, it was a three-picture arc for Billy Loomis to slowly turn his daughter into the killer. Obviously, those things didn’t pan out, given certain things that happened. But, no, I know nothing about the seventh.”
So, fast forward to the current day and Ulrich is confirming that that plan is well and truly dead – no imaginary Billy without Sam – and he won’t be coming back to the series, saying: “Without Melissa Barrera and Sam Loomis, there’s no Billy Loomis. He was in her head. They had their chance at it and didn’t quite get to complete the three-film arc that they talked to me about.”
Now, after Ulrich made these comments, the Soska sisters reposted a comment about Billy guiding Sam to become a killer and adding that she would eventually have killed Sidney (Neve Campbell), and they replied with the eye emojis again:

So, does this mean anything? Well, probably not for now, but that’s two very clear posts today hinting at the future of Scream, asking fans what they want, and even acknowledging a plan for the franchise that now will never see fruition.
But could it? Now, look, I think Sam has a satisfactory ending in Scream VI, dropping the Ghostface mask and walking off with her sister, Tara (Jenna Ortega) but that’s not to say that Sam – Berrera – couldn’t return to the series and, if she did, could Ulrich come too as the imaginary ghost of her psycho dad? Ulrich doesn’t seem to think so but if the Soska sisters are involved in the future of the franchise, they have acknowledged they’re aware of the cancelled plans, so could this lead to a resurrection of that story?

Personally, while Sidney Prescott is one of my favourite final girls, I did like Sam in this franchise and would gladly welcome her back to the story. Having her go full killer would be an extra bonus.
So much to think about; Soskas directing the next movie? Sam and Billy returning to the franchise as two killers in one body? I love thinking about what might come next in my favourite horror series.
Thoughts? I know you have them and I wanna hear ’em all.
