Sony has had a number of problems over the past several months. Ever since the leaks last Christmas, many have lost faith in the company. Through the E-Mails, it was clear that Sony were directionless with the Spider-Man franchise, and had horribly mishandled Aaron Sorkin’s Steve Jobs project, which has since moved to Universal – and don’t even get us started on Ghostbusters!
With all of this being said, it seems that more bad news may be on the horizon for Sony. In a recent interview with variety, new Sony Pictures Chairman, Tom Rothman, made clear that after the release of Spectre, the rights to distribute the Bond franchise will no longer be Sony’s.
According to Variety’s article, MGM will approach Warner Bros to distribute the Bond films. This is based upon the close friendship between MGM’s Gary Barber and Warner Bros’ Kevin Tsujihara.
Sony has distributed the Bond franchise since Casino Royale in 2006 and has held this position through both Quantum of Solace and Skyfall.
It’s too early to tell how this will go, and many of these studio’s offers may be contingent upon the success of Spectre, which has already purportedly gone over budget. However, with all of this being said, it is good to know that 007 isn’t going anywhere, anytime soon.
