Writer/Director James DeMonaco returning for The Purge 3

October 7th, 2014 by Irwin Fletcher Comments

The first two Purge films grossed nearly $200 million and only cost $12 million combined. So it shouldn’t be much of a surprise that Universal and Blumhouse are moving ahead on The Purge 3. James DeMonaco, the writer and director of the first two films, is returning to write the third and eying the chance to direct as well.

Deadline broke news, with details of DeMonaco returning. Here’s what he had to say:

“I never imagined that The Purge would become the phenomenon it has become and I am thrilled to continue my collaboration with Blumhouse, Sebastien Lemercier, Platinum Dunes and the great team at Universal in building The Purge into a worldwide franchise.”

In 2022, the United States is a nation reborn ruled by the “New Founding Fathers of America.” To maintain low crime and unemployment rates throughout the year, the government has instituted an annual 12-hour period called “The Purge” during which all criminal activity (including murder, theft, rape, etc.) becomes legal. The only rules during The Purge are that “Level 10” government officials must remain unharmed and usage of weaponry above “Class 4” is forbidden. The Purge is designed to act as a catharsis for the American people, so that they may vent all negative emotions however they desire.
