28 Days Later sequel gets great cast while Cillian Murphy won’t return… for a while

Man, this gathered momentum very quickly! Within a few months of hearing another 28 Days Later movie was happening, we now have a trilogy with one heck of a cast attached.

As we say above, the return to the world of the very fast zombies, picking up from 2002’s 28 Days Later and sequel 20 Weeks Later in 2007, is now a trilogy being overseen by original movie director Danny Boyle, star Cillian Murphy and writer Alex Garland; as of now, it looks like Candyman director Nia DaCosta will be helming the first movie in the threesome.

Danny Boyle, Alex Garland and Cillian Murphy all confirmed back for 28 Years Later!

Now it’s being reported that Killing Eve star Jodie Comer, Kick-Ass himself, Aaron Taylor-Johnson and the legendary Ralph Fiennes are all on board to star in DaCosta’s installment.

You may have noticed that the line-up doesn’t include Murphy, however, it seems that he will be missing in the first movie, will have an appearance in the second one and will be the lead in part three.

Last year when Murphy was told that there was a rumour of more movies in the series, he said: “That’s great to hear. I didn’t know that – I would be there in a flash. I made two movies with both of those guys, and I would love to work with them again. Of course, I’m there.”

I have a particular fondness for 28 Days Later as it was my first premiere as a professional journalist and I got to interview Murphy, Boyle and Garland; but that aside, it really is a great, gritty take on the zombie genre and is responsible for giving us the fast-moving undead and I even like the sequel, which seems to be much maligned these days, so I’m looking forward to more stories in that world.

What about you all? Are you looking forward to it or do you think in a post-Walking Dead/Shaun of the Dead world, there’s no life left in zombies? Let me know…
