So, out of all the interesting and fun Star Wars theories there are out there, few are as interesting as Darth Jar Jar.
The theory is that Jar Jar Binks, played in the prequels by Ahmed Best, was not the bumbling fool he appeared to be but rather was actually a Sith who was, either along with Palpatine or on his own, masterminding all the events that would lead to the fall of the Jedi and the Republic and the creation of the Empire.
Many believe, or like to have fun speculating, that this was George Lucas’ plan all along and, had it not been for the almost universal dislike of Binks among fans, it would have been developed over the span of the three movies instead of the character becoming little more than a background character who was witlessly used as a pawn by Palpatine to help destroy the Republic.
Indeed, the idea was touched on by The Clone Wars animated series when it was revealed that Jar Jar’s clumsiness always manages to lead to something beneficial and Mace Windu believed that Binks was an odd channel for the Force. The Darth Jar Jar idea is that… only with the Dark Side.
“What I can say about it is… there’s a lot about it that’s true,” Best said in 2016 (here).
At the time, Best also described a scene from Revenge of the Sith that saw Palpatine confide in Binks about his plans: “It was just me and Palpatine walking down the runway, talking about the plans to turn the Empire into what it had turned out to be… It was a very dark, very personal, quiet scene, but for some reason Palpatine decided to confide in Jar Jar that pretty much he was going to wreak havoc. Wherever that scene is, that would really give great credibility to the Darth Jar Jar theory.”
So why are we talking about this now?
Well, Best has taken to social media, below, to reveal the title page of a script he appears to be penning, the star wrote: “I think it’s time for my version of how it all went down.”
In the post, he added the hashtag #DarthJarJar which has us believing that perhaps he’s going to delve into the idea of Jar Jar being the monster behind the veil of the Dark Side all along and I love this idea.
We’re also wondering if perhaps this is why we haven’t seen anything of Binks in the lore since Clone Wars ended. There were rumours that he was to appear in Obi-Wan Kenobi as down-on-his luck and living on the streets, where Ewan McGregor’s Kenobi would find him but, alas, it never happened (obviously). Could Disney/Lucasfilm have plans for the Gungan? Could revealing him to be a villain all along be part of the plan?
Honestly, probably not, but I love this theory and, honestly, I’m more than happy to help keep it alive and well. But it’s most likely Best just wants to set the record straight on his often unpleasant time on Star Wars and we’re here for that because he didn’t deserve the hate he got from fans and maybe it’s long-past time to get it all out in the open.
Thoughts?
