American Gods star Ricky Whittle confirms he’s ‘had talks’ for Green Lantern

March 8th, 2019 by Marc Comments

We all know that Tyrese Gibson has been pitching hard for the role of John Stewart in the planned but still a long way away Green Lantern Corp movie, but we finally have an actor who has confirmed he’s been in talks who ISN’T Tyrese.

The actor in question if American Gods star Ricky Whittle who, while talking to Syfy Wire on the set of American Gods Season 2 brought the other big DC green hero.

“We know that Green Lantern Corps is coming out. I’ve had conversations, and to be in the conversation is a big honor. That’s all I can really ever ask for. Lots of fans have been campaigning for me. If they can get me Green Lantern, too, we are going to have to do something special. I’m going to have to start doing tours in full costume and go and watch with all the fans. But, yeah, I would love to be a part of that world. Hopefully, they do it justice this time.”

He went on to prove he’s not just trying to get the gig in a major movie for the sake of it, but is a fan and knows what lies in the heart of Green Lantern: “It’s a fantastic character, and an important character, if you read the comics in terms of human society and race and different issues that we are engulfed by in at the moment in America. You never know. If Geoff Johns is reading this, I am definitely up for it. I’m a huge fan.”

We of course know – as too does Whittle, it seems – the Geoff Johns’ Mad Ghost Productions is currently working on bringing the Corp to the big screen again: “What I like is they are taking their time with it. They are not rushing it like with the first one. They are taking their time and doing it right, which is how it should be. It’s in good hands with Geoff. Fingers crossed. Whatever he does, I’ll be watching it, no matter what.”

For what it’s worth, I sort of fell away from American Gods but I loved Whittle as Shadow Moon and definitely think he can deliver the necessary humanity and bad-ass-ery that John Stewart would need to possess.

I’m happy that Whittle is at least in the mix at this stage… what say you all?

Marc is a self-confessed nerd. Ever since seeing Star Wars for the first time around 1979 he’s been an unapologetic fan of the Wars and still believes, with Clone Wars and now Underworld, we are yet to see the best Star Wars. He’s a dad of two who now doesn’t have the time (or money) to collect the amount of toys, comics, movies and books he once did, much to the relief of his long-suffering wife. In the real world he’s a graphic designer. He started Following the Nerd because he was tired of searching a million sites every day for all the best news that he loves and decided to create one place where you can go to get the whole lot. Secretly he longs to be sitting in the cockpit of his YT-1300 Corellian Transport ship with his co-pilot Chewie, roaming the universe, waiting for his next big adventure, but feels just at home watching cartoons with his kids….
