Andy Serkis, Colin Farrell and (maybe) Matthew McConaughey join The Batman cast

Big news tonight for Batman fans as thee massive names have been thrown into the ring for major DC characters in Matt Reeves’ The Batman.

First up, Andy Serkis is in talks to play Batman’s number one confidant, Alfred Pennyworth.

He’s an unusual choice (I was hoping for Pierce Brosnan, personally, or, ideally, Jeremy Irons returning to the role after BvS and Justice League) and I can see him being a tougher Alfred, more akin to the version played by Sean Pertwee in Gotham, the sort of Alfred who taught Bruce Wayne the ropes before he went on to become Batman.

UPDATED: Reeves has taken to Twitter and confirmed Serkis IS his Alfred Pennyworth:

Next up is another usual choice, but certainly another inspired choice, with Colin Farrell being up for the role of John Constantine, no, sorry, Oswald Cobblepot AKA Penguin.

Firstly, if Farrell is finally coming into the DCEU, I would have loved him to be Constantine, but to have him as Penguin is certainly an unexpected choice… will he have a fat suit or will we be seeing a younger Penguin once again ala Gotham?

Finally, several outlets are reporting that Matthew McConaughey is set to play Harvey Dent (it’s expected the movie will not see him fall to become Two-Face, but if it’s based on The Long Halloween as we all expect, you can expect it to happen somewhere in Reeves’ proposed trilogy of movies).

Now, firstly, this would be a superb piece of casting as McConaghey oozes charm and charisma and would be a great Dent.

However…

I’m not sure this is as likely to happen as Serkis and Farrell at this stage as I just can’t seem to find reliable sources. Yet.

That said, no smoke without fire and given the quality of actors Reeves is aiming for, I wouldn’t rule this out at all.

The stars would join Robert Pattinson as Bruce Wayne AKA Batman, Zoe Kravitz who has been cast as Selina Kyle, AKA Catwoman, Paul Dano as Edward Nashton AKA The Riddler and Jeffrey Wright as James Gordon.

That’s some cast.

What do you think of these choices? Let me know.

The Batman will be released on June 25th, 2021.
