All eyes are on Ben Affleck this month as his new take on Bruce Wayne could sink or swim the future of Batman on the big screen. He’s had a lot to say about his portrayal of the character though, calling him “broken” and “war-weary.”
In his recent interview with the NY Times (via Squareeyed), Affleck has spoken about Zack Snyder’s vision for the film, and of The Dark Knight going forward. He’s “a Batman who had been Batman for 20 years,” and the director wanted him to be a “war-weary Batman.”
On playing Wayne, Affleck said “He’s living in this grey zone. He’s more broken, not slick. He’s filling the hole in his soul with these increasingly morally questionable nighttime excursions — fighting crime as well as by being this playboy.”
Speaking on his vigilante co-star, Henry Cavill said “There’s some real pain buried in there, in the soul of this Batman, yet it’s covered with scar tissue. There’s some bitterness, which, if dealt with poorly, can go down a bad road.”
We can only speculate what this pain could be caused by, but at this point we’re just going to have to wait patiently to find out when Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice is released on March 25th.
